When using a period, comma, or exclamation mark with quotation marks, place the punctuation inside the quotes. If you’re breaking up a sentence, place a comma after the first part, also inside quotes. Use quotation marks to set off all direct quotations. Quotation marks are used in pairs; the first mark indicates the beginning of the quotation and the second mark conveys its conclusion. You do not need to use any punctuation before a quotation if it forms part of your own sentence.
