To quote in MLA format, you should follow these guidelines:
- Short quotations (four typed lines or fewer of prose or three lines of verse) should be enclosed within double quotation marks.
- Long quotations (more than four typed lines) should be presented in block format. Do not use quotation marks; instead, indent the entire quote one inch from the left margin to form a "block" of text. Double-space the quote, just like the text of the paper, and place the period at the end of the quote, not after the parentheses.
- When quoting prose, use MLA citation style. Place the citation immediately after the quotation but before any punctuation ending the clause or sentence.
